LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man is facing charges after an 86-year-old grandfather from Utah was allegedly bilked out of more than $51,000 in a common telephone scam.
Authorities tell The Sun of Lowell (http://bit.ly/1k3zgY8 ) that someone called the Pleasant Grove, Utah man from Lowell and claimed he was an attorney for the victim's grandson who had been arrested in Massachusetts and needed $7,000 bail money.
In a second call, the suspect asked for an additional $44,000.
The Utah man sent the money.
Lowell police arrested 36-year Mohammed Kann on a charge of larceny over $250. Kann was being held and was unavailable for comment. He is expected to be arraigned Monday.
He is only charged in connection with the first package, because someone else signed for the second. The investigation is ongoing.
