WESTPORT, Mass. (AP) — Parishioners at a Westport Roman Catholic church are offering a $1,300 reward for information that leads to the vandals who trashed the church and stole several holy items.
Vandals broke into St. John the Baptist church on March 2 and fled with its tabernacle — the receptacle that holds the Communion hosts — after breaking a large cross and vandalizing a shrine.
Cash was left untouched.
A staff member discovered the vandalism.
Police have so far been unable to come up with a suspect.
Investigators have checked local pawn shops, metal buyers and even eBay in an effort to find the missing items.
The Rev. Leonard Hindsley tells The Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/YvQjoU ) he does not think the vandals were motivated by profit, but by a desire to harm the parish.
