WEST GARDINER, Maine (AP) — West Gardiner's first woman fire chief has been fired after less than three months on the job.
Town officials who confirmed the termination say it's because Vicki Dill did not meet requirements of a settlement with the town to improve her professional skills.
Dill became chief of the volunteer department in February after signing a settlement to resolve complaints that the town had refused to appoint her chief in 2009 because she's a woman. The Maine Human Rights Commission found in her favor.
The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/10F0nha ) reports that former selectman Victor Goodwin Sr. said Dill had until May to prove she had fulfilled the requirements of the position, including being able to drive a fire truck.
Dill said Monday conversations were still ongoing and an unspecified paperwork matter hadn't been resolved.
