LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — The University of Massachusetts Lowell is continuing its rapid expansion plans and is in the process of purchasing two properties near campus.
The university plans to acquire a former gas station to expand an existing visitors' parking lot for the University Crossing building, which will include the university's new bookstore.
The Sun (http://bit.ly/1hGEdFn ) reports that the other parcel, across Pawtucket Street next to the new Richard Howe Bridge, will be used for a combination of visitor parking and open space.
UMass' purchase of the properties comes amid a growing dialogue between the university and the city over contributions UMass could make in lieu of property taxes.
City Manager Bernie Lynch said this fall the city hopes UMass Lowell will agree to "equitable contributions" to the city.
