FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — A New Bedford man charged with killing a 69-year-old retired Fairhaven school teacher in her home and stealing her jewelry has pleaded not guilty.
Joshua Silva was ordered held without bail at his Superior Court arraignment Monday to charges including murder and armed robbery.
Prosecutors say the 36-year-old Silva entered the home of Joyce Howland on Oct. 14 or 15 then stole her jewelry and slashed her throat.
Bristol District Attorney Sam Sutter has said Howland's head was nearly severed.
Authorities say Silva had helped install insulation in the attic of Howland's home just days before she was found dead.
Silva's court-appointed attorney tells The Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/IJ1quF) that it's still early in the process and he plans to pursue "all available defenses."
