SEATTLE (AP) — The roster churn for the Seattle Mariners continued Wednesday when the club selected catcher Brandon Bantz from Triple-A Tacoma to add depth with Jesus Sucre likely out a few days after getting hit on his left hand.
The Mariners also transferred outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to the 60-day disabled list as he continues to struggle in coming back from a hamstring strain suffered in April that only added to a long list of injuries. Gutierrez has been on the disabled list since April 23 and will be eligible to be activated on June 22.
Seattle also optioned infielder Carlos Triunfel to Tacoma to clear a spot on the 25-man roster for Bantz.
The Mariners decided to select Bantz over promising catching prospect Mike Zunino because it's a short-term fix. The Mariners expect Sucre to only miss a few days and Bantz is strictly being used as a backup to Kelly Shoppach. Sucre was forced to leave Tuesday night's game when he was hit on the left hand by a backswing.
Manager Eric Wedge said Sucre will likely be unavailable for three or four days.
"We don't want to disrupt anyone else down there right now," Wedge said before Wednesday's game.
Bantz was a 30th round selection of the Mariners in the 2009 draft out of Dallas Baptist. He's appeared in 17 games between Double-A Jackson and Tacoma this season.
