LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Olympic silver medalists April Ross and Jennifer Kessy beat three-time Olympic gold champion Kerri Walsh Jennings and Whitney Plavik 18-21, 21-17 and 16-14 on Saturday to advance to final of the ASICS World Series Cup.
Ross and Kessy will face the top-ranked team of Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima. The Brazilian duo beat Germany's Katrin and Ilka Semmler Holtwick 21-14, 21-16, a day after winning their fourth FIVB Grand Slam title of the year.
"It's always fun to play Kerri," Kessy said. "She makes you play your best. Trailing in the third set, I knew if we could side out we could get back into the math. April is amazing and always has confidence in me. Tomorrow it's on to the Brazilians and we look forward to bringing home the inaugural cup to the United States."
Walsh Jennings gave birth to her third child in February, and withdrew from the FIVB Grand Slam this week because of an abdominal strain.
"This event was amazing and I feel fortunate to be back, I just hate the outcome of the match," Walsh Jennings said. "It was fun playing with Whitney and we played against one of the best teams in the world and I was really looking forward to playing against the Brazilian team. Most importantly, it gave me the drive to back and win."
In the men's FIVB Grand Slam final, Americans Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal beat Spain's Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera 21-15, 21-18 for their third title of the year.
"It was a lot of fun to play at home in an FIVB tournament. I have never played an FIVB tournament in the U.S.," Dalhausser said. "We have a goal of gaining more wins than any other team on the tour which I think we have done thus far."
