NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — A New Bedford man police say was drunk when he was involved in a crash that left another driver dead has pleaded not guilty.
Manuel Ribeiro was allowed to remain free on $15,000 bail after his arraignment Tuesday on charges including motor vehicle homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and drug possession.
Police say the 23-year-old Ribeiro was involved in a crash at about 4 a.m. Sunday that killed 18-year-old Juan Gonzalez.
Authorities say he fled the scene on foot and was caught by police nearby. Police say he smelled of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet.
The Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/12OiUcB ) reports that his lawyer said the case "is not as clear" as prosecutors allege.
