DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Case Matheis scored with 1:40 left in the second overtime to help Duke beat Loyola (Md.) 12-11 on Sunday in the first round of the NCAA men's lacrosse tournament.
Matheis finished with three goals while Josh Dionne had two goals and an assist and Jordan Wolf scored two goals for the seventh-seeded Blue Devils (13-5).
Duke will face second-seeded Notre Dame on May 19 in the quarterfinals.
Zach Herreweyers had three goals, Matt Sawyer had two goals and an assist and Justin Ward had five assists for the defending national champion Greyhounds (11-5). They led 7-2 late in the second period before Duke rallied.
Matheis forced overtime when he scored with 1:05 remaining.
OHIO STATE 16, TOWSON 6
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Jesse King scored four goals, Carter Brown and Logan Schuss had three each, and Ohio State cruised past Towson.
The third-seeded Buckeyes (13-3) scored four goals in each quarter to overwhelm Towson (10-8), which got three goals from Andrew Hodgson.
Playing its first-ever home game in the tournament, Ohio State fell behind 2-1 at the outset as Matthew Hughes and Hodgson each scored in the first 10 minutes for Towson.
The Buckeyes rallied with three goals in the final two minutes of the first quarter. King notched his 27th with 1:45 left, Brown scored a man-up goal just over a minute later and David Planning scored with one second left.
King scored again in the first minute of the second to stake Ohio State to a 5-2 lead and the Buckeyes cruised from there. They will play Cornell (13-3) in the quarterfinals next weekend.
CORNELL 16, MARYLAND 8
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Rob Pannell had four goals and three assists, Steve Mock also scored four goals, and Cornell surprised No. 6 seed Maryland.
The Big Red (13-3) never trailed and led 6-4 at halftime, 10-6 after three quarters and pulled away in the fourth quarter behind Mock, who scored two straight goals to make it 14-7 with 6:58 left.
Goalie A.J. Fiore stopped 12 shots for Cornell, an at-large entrant from the Ivy League.
John Haus had two goals for Maryland (10-4).
Pannell has 40 goals and a team-high 47 assists, and Mock leads the Big Red with 52 goals.
SYRACUSE 12, BRYANT 7
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Dylan Donahue scored three goals as top-seeded Syracuse rallied from four goals down to beat Bryant.
Undaunted in its first tournament appearance and facing a perennial power seeking its 12th national title, Bryant (8-11) stunned the Orange (14-3) early. Colin Dunster scored twice in the first 39 seconds and Peter McMahon and Shane Morrell followed with goals for a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Syracuse regrouped and Matt Walters capped a three-goal surge with four seconds left in the period. Goals by JoJo Marasco and Donahue in the second knotted the score at 5-all at halftime.
Luke Cometti and Kevin Rice scored early in the third to give Syracuse the lead, and the Orange pulled away with goals by Cometti, Rice and Donahue in the final quarter.
Kevin Massa won 22 of 23 faceoffs to help keep Bryant in the game.
