NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (AP) — Police say a badly decomposed body pulled from the Merrimack River last weekend appears to be that of a sailor who's been missing since November.
The body was pulled from the water at the Newburyport Yacht Club on Sunday.
Police say although positive identification is pending, they are working on the assumption that the body is 51-year-old Richard Decker. The German national was reported missing in November. Authorities determined he likely fell into the river from his 37-foot boat.
Police tell The Daily News of Newburyport (http://bit.ly/11UAMHI ) that because of the advanced decomposition of the boy, it could be weeks before the medical examiner makes a positive identification.
The city is holding an online auction to sell the boat because no one in Decker's family came forward to claim it.
