WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Spencer man has been found mentally incompetent for trial in the 2012 killing of his 88-year-old stepfather.
The Telegram & Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/19mz68C) a judge Thursday committed 39-year-old Jason Masiello (mass-YELL'-oh), to Bridgewater State Hospital for six months.
Prosecutors say Masiello cut Michael Iagallo's (eye-uh-GALL'-ohs) throat, wrapped his body in plastic and put it in a crawl space under the family home. His mother called police after finding the body.
Thursday's hearing was held at the request of Masiello's lawyer Michael Hussey, who was replaced for the hearing by another attorney.
Masiello insisted in court that he is competent but his mind is "interrupted" by a "telepathic communications system."
A psychologist who has evaluated Masiello said he suffers either from a delusional disorder or schizophrenia, but medication might eventually improve his condition enough for trial.
