SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A Beverly man convicted of participating in the fatal beating and stabbing of another man at a city park has been sentenced to up to 20 years in state prison.
Sajan Christensen was sentenced on Monday in Salem Superior Court for his role in the March 2011 death of 26-year-old James Vernazzaro.
The 20-year-old Christensen was convicted this month of manslaughter.
Authorities say Christensen, then 18, stabbed and beat the victim with a baseball bat. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Prosecutors say Vernazzaro was unarmed and had been in a dispute with his assailants.
The Salem News (http://bit.ly/1600MB0 ) reports that Christensen's lawyer sought a shorter prison term, citing his client's difficult upbringing and abuse at the hands of his birth parents.
Vernazzaro's other attacker also pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
