LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — A vocal critic of Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua (lan-TEE'-gwah) has been charged with vandalizing the mayor's pickup truck.
The vandalism that occurred on March 29 while the truck was parked outside a city restaurant caused an estimated $2,500 worth of damage.
The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/11ITxe2 ) reports that 46-year-old Antonio Arevalo was charged based on video surveillance footage from a nearby business.
Police say he put rock salt in the gas tank, threw garbage on the truck, placed a broom stick in the driver's door handle, and stuffed lottery tickets in the tail pipe.
Arevalo told police it was a "childish prank."
He will be summoned to court on a charge of malicious damage.
Arevalo has worked with Lantigua's opponents and previously sought a restraining order against the mayor, which was denied.
