SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A Lynn man charged with fatally beating his girlfriend's 3-month-old son is now facing a murder charge.
An Essex County grand jury has indicted 32-year-old Anthony Gideika (guh-DYE'-kuh) on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with Chase Gideika's death in July.
Gideika had previously only faced a charge of assault and battery on a child causing substantial injury.
The Daily Item (http://bit.ly/1f1uhom ) reports that the child's mother, who had not previously been charged, has been indicted on reckless endangerment and other charges.
Prosecutors at the district court arraignment said Gideika had recently confirmed he was not the biological father of Chase and a twin brother, and was "self-medicating" with Klonopin to handle post-traumatic stress associated with military service in Iraq.
His lawyer has said the baby's injuries were accidental.
