FAIRFIELD, Maine (AP) — Public health officials say a horse in Fairfield that contracted eastern equine encephalitis has died.
Dr. Sheila Pinette, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control, says the disease was confirmed last month.
Pinette would say only that the horse died in Somerset County, but Fairfield officials confirmed that the horse died in town.
Pinette tells the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/18OjkTE ) three horses and one emu have died of the mosquito-borne disease in Maine this year. Last year no animal deaths from EEE were recorded.
There have been no human cases, but health officials say people should still take precautions, such as wearing bug spray, until the first hard frost kills mosquitoes.
