MANSFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Mansfield selectmen have voted to euthanize a dog that mauled a 6-year-old boy in town, an attack that required 400 stitches.
The board after hearing the recommendation of the animal control officer voted 3-2 on Wednesday night to have the 6-year-old pointer-hound mix put down.
The Sun Chronicle (http://bit.ly/ZDiTqY ) reports that the dog's owners say they will appeal the decision in court.
The victim, Christian Herbert, was bitten on the face by the dog on Jan. 3 while the owner's teenage daughter was babysitting him.
The boy's mother, Dawn Herbert-Miller, said the experience has not only caused physical scars but lasting emotional ones. She says he calls himself "ugly."
The selectmen who voted against euthanization suggested sending the dog to a behavior training facility.
