NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — The body of a U.S. Marine killed in combat operations in Afghanistan has returned to Massachusetts.
A military honor guard was on hand at New Bedford Regional Airport on Thursday afternoon, when the remains of Lance Cpl. Matthew Rodriguez arrived from Dover Air Force Base.
The 19-year-old from Fairhaven was killed last week.
About 200 people gathered at a playground near the tarmac when Rodriguez' remain arrived to pay tribute to his sacrifice.
Police officers and firefighters joined relatives as the body was taken in a procession to a funeral home in Mattapoisett, passing Rodriguez' home along the way.
A wake is set for Sunday, followed by a funeral on Monday at a Fairhaven church. Burial will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
