BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) — Barnstable police have arrested a homeless man they say is responsible for fires at four seasonal homes in Hyannis.
Matthew James Pungitore pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday and was held on $50,000 bail.
Police tell the Cape Cod times that the 27-year-old Pungitore, who has an extensive criminal record, was tied to two of the fires through fingerprints.
Investigators say the defendant broke into the unoccupied homes to stay warm by turning on the stove. In one case, towels near the stove caught fire.
Police say he left without reporting the fire.
The total amount of damage to the homes was estimated at $160,000.
