BEIJING (AP) _ German Franziska Van Almsick set a world record in the women's 100-meter short-course freestyle event Wednesday at the Shanghai World Cup meet, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
The 16-year-old swimmer clocked 53.46 seconds, two hundredths of a second faster than the previous mark set by Livia Copariu of Romania in 1988, the news agency said.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Fourth seeded Fabrice Santoro advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP Tour event by defeating fellow Frenchman Guillaume Raoux 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Santoro will meet Chris Pridham of Canada who defeated Alexander Mronz of Germany 6-4, 7-5.
Another Frenchman, Olivier Delaitre, defeated Leonardo Lavalle of Mexico 6-3, 6-1.
TOKYO (AP) - Parimutuel betting on horse races in Japan grossed a record $28.9 billion in 1992, up 5.2 percent from the previous year, the Japan Horseracing Association said Wednesday.
''The sales have steadily increased since 1956, sometimes slowly and sometimes radically, but never slowed down,'' said Tsuguo Sato of the association.
Sato said attendance improved 8.2 percent to 13.2 million at Japan's 10 major courses. He said 11.2 percent of those attending were women.
Racing was held 288 days in 1992.
NEW YORK (AP) - The Mobil Indoor Grand Prix track and field circuit will begin its 12th season Friday night with the Knights of Columbus Indoor Games at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
This year's 10-meet schedule, including three meets in Canada and seven in the United States, will culminate with the Mobil Indoor Championships Feb. 26 at Madison Square Garden.
The Grand Prix will offer $200,000 in prize money for athletes residing in the United States and Canada.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Pacers placed 7-foot-1 center Greg Dreiling on injured reserve on Wednesday and activated guard Vern Fleming.
Dreiling is expected to be out at least two weeks with a severe ankle sprain, Pacers spokesman Dale Ratermann said Wednesday.
During a workout last week, Dreiling injured his left ankle, which was put in a cast, Ratermann said.
Fleming had been on the injured list since Dec. 26 with a strained groin. He had been averaging 11.3 points and is 10th in the NBA in field goal percentage with 53.8 percent.
Dreiling played in 16 of the Pacers' 30 games, averaging 0.7 points and 1.6 rebounds.
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) - Zimbabwe will be seeded at this year's Dunhill Cup golf championship even though it has never even made the final.
Organizers say the African nation deserves being one of the eight seeds in the 16-team tournament Oct. 14-17, because its top three players are so highly ranked.
They are Nick Price, the PGA champion who is rated ninth in the the world, Mark McNulty (19th) and Tony Johnstone (28th).
Sweden, which won the title two years ago, will have to qualify for the tournament.
