TEL AVIV, ISRAEL TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) _ A Palestinian wielding a commando knife and shouting ''God is great 3/8'' stabbed a Jewish man to death Tuesday and wounded two people before he was shot and captured by police, officials said.
They said Kurt Moshe Schallinger, 73, was killed as he left his car on a Tel Aviv street crowded with children wearing costumes and masks to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Purim.
His death raised to 18 the number of Israelis killed since the Palestinian uprising began in December 1987. At least 403 Palestinians have died in the insurrection.
These other reports surfaced of violence and police and court actions in Israel and the occupied Gaza Strip and West Bank:
-Troops shot and seriously wounded a Palestinian who threw an ax at an army patrol, a military spokesman said. Arab witnesses said Riyad Nasser Sharif, 25, attacked Israeli soldiers who entered his Gaza City home during a wake for Sharif's younger brother, Abdul, who was shot to death by troops Saturday. They said the troops ordered mourners to tear down Palestinian banners in the house.
-Various sources said 15 Palestinians were wounded in clashes with Israeli troops in the occupied territories. Arab doctors said victims included a 15- year-old from Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip, who was in critical condition with a bullet wound in the back, and a 13-year-old from Tulkarem in the West Bank, shot in the leg.
-Troops in the West Bank village of Beit Iba demolished a house belonging to a Palestinian accused of arson and firebomb attacks last year.
-A military court in Nablus sentenced Mohammed Daoud to life in prison after convicting him of killing a pregnant Jewish settler and her 5-year-old son in a firebomb attack on her car in April 1987.
-In Arab east Jerusalem, agents of the Shin Bet secret service worked to dismantle a guerrilla network they said was operated by the Marxist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, part of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Police said it was one of the largest PLO networks uncovered in 20 years.
They said 40 network members arrested in the past five weeks were suspected of carrying out about 50 arson attacks since 1985 that injured Palestinians and at least five Israelis.
Police spokeswoman Ahuva Ivri said the man who killed Schallinger was a Palestinian from a Gaza Strip refugee camp. She said he shouted ''Allahu akbar 3/8'' (God is great 3/8) after stabbing his victims.
Arab reports identified the prisoner as Abdul Rahman Mohammed Zakout, 25.
Police said the killer wounded two other Israelis as he ran after stabbing Schallinger, pursued by an Israeli guard from the Egyptian Embassy.
The streets were crowded with people celebrating Purim, which marks the salavation of Jews from their enemies during the time of the Persian King Xerxes.
Officers said the assailant climbed onto the roof of a house and was shot when he tried to attack an officer.
Ichilov Hospital spokeswoman Bianca Lederman said the Palestinian was hit in the left thigh and the two Israeli stabbing victims were in moderate condition with stomach wounds.
