LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Actress Valerie Harper's mother, Iva McConnell Harper, has died after a long fight with cancer. She was 71.
Mrs. Harper died Friday in her apartment near the Beverly Hills home of Valerie Harper and her husband, Tony Cacciotti. She had been living with her daughter and son-in-law until the final month of her illness, when she returned to her home.
Valerie Harper canceled plans to attend a benefit race Sunday sponsored by Love is Feeding Everyone, an organization she co-founded with actor Dennis Weaver, said her publicist, Monique Moss.
At the time her mother was taken ill, Miss Harper was fighting a legal battle over the television series ''Valerie'' with Lorimar Telepictures.
She won the contract dispute which claimed she was wrongfully fired, and a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded her $1.8 million in compensatory damages and a share of the profits from the show, now called ''The Hogan Family.''
The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to The Hunger Project, an organization dedicated to feeding the poor, based in San Francisco.
Moss said private funeral arrangements would be made by the family.
